Follow Up

You have probably heard the old saying, “The fortune is in the follow-up.”

No doubt, follow-up is one of the key components to building a successful team but understanding and executing professional follow-up is something many over-zealous networker’s fail to grasp.

The key is in finding a sensible way to stay in touch with people that doesn’t let potential prospects fall though the cracks and prevents you from hounding them to the point where they want to strangle you. We also want to be conscious of chasing the wrong people, something we will discuss in detail in another segment.

I recall a time when I was building a business and I had prospects names on several different legal pads all over my house. I have never been a very organized individual so keeping track of things has never been easy for me.

I had shown Bob my business plan several weeks earlier but he didn’t show a great deal of interest so I forgot about him and moved on to the next group of people I was recruiting.

I went to our weekly meeting about a month or two after meeting with Bob and much to surprise, there was Bob! I’m thinking to myself, “This is great! Bob does have an interest and he showed up on his own to get more information!”

Then my joy went to dismay as the people that had invited Bob to the meeting sat down next to him.

It got worse.

After the meeting, Bob signed up.

Needless to say I was beside myself and wondering what on earth had just happened.

This was my first encounter with the failure to follow-up and to be honest I didn’t much care for it.

That led to thinking what could I have done differently to prevent this from happening again?

Here are some helpful follow-up tips you may find beneficial.

1. Keep track of everyone you present your business too
2. Unless they tell you no, set a time to follow- up with them
3. Use a follow-up system with auto responders to stay in touch
4. Keep your prospects updated on company enhancements
5. Invite them to special events
6. Don’t pester and always be happy and positive when spending time with them
7. And if you really want to have some fun, drive by there house often in your new Mercedes
